  • Townsend family of Coventry, Warwickshire

I correspond with a third cousin I “met” through a collaboration website.

She and I share a brickwall – the Townsend family of Coventry.

My Great Great Grandmother was a lady called Harriet Mary Townsend, and she was born in 1811 to John and Mary Townsend, in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Harriet Mary married a Charles Dixon in 1830 in Coventry.

Harriet Mary and Charles appear to have had five children:

    • Ann Elizabeth Dixon b1832
    • a son Dixon b1833 (the register is burn-damaged and the name is unreadable)
    • Charles Matthew Dixon b1835
    • Henry Miller Dixon b1837

Charles disappears – I would love to know where to! Thoughts are many and varied – he was in prison, he died, he was transported to Australia as a convict, he left the marriage – as I say, I would love to know…

Meanwhile, Harriet Mary is living in Little Park Street with her mother Mary, who apparently ran a boarding house – as there were “lodgers” in the 1841 census. Namely, one Emanuel Miller…. see any coincidences, yet?

Birth registrations show that Harriet Mary and Emanuel had at least 6 children and possibly 7:

    • Henry Miller Dixon b1837
    • Harriet Fanny Miller b1838
    • John James Miller b1840
    • Emma Barbara Miller b1842
    • Jane Ann Miller b1843
    • Fanny Miller b1844
    • Harriet Mary Miller b1850

Henry Miller Dixon b1837 is my Great Grandfather. He arrived in Australia per the ship ALFRED in 1860 under the name Henry Dixon. He died in 1906 in Australia under the name Henry Miller.

My third cousin is descended from John James Miller, so she has no difficulties in identifying Emanuel as her Great Great Grandfather!

But, back to the Townsends – for a long time, I didn’t understand the Census entries that shows Harriet Mary’s mother Mary as INDEPENDENT. My cousin found a will for a William Townsend – it appears that William was Harriet Mary’s uncle, brother to her father John. It also appears that William was quite wealthy! His will allocates £1000s to a number of his nieces and nephews. Including Harriet Mary… and to his sister-in-law Mary, property.

Who was William Townsend? Better still, who were William’s parents? They would be my 3Greats Grandparents!

So – the first question is – “why was Harriet Mary born in Suffolk?”

Second question – “who IS Henry Miller Dixon’s father? – Emanuel Miller or Charles Dixon?”

Third question – “where did Charles Dixon disappear to?’

Fourth question – “who are William (and John’s) parents – my 3GGrandparents?”

Fifth question  – “how did William make his money?”

  • Why were the Turnbull in Marshall Mount?

As is usual with coincidences and flukes of nature, I posted a Thread about the Turnbulls in Wollongong (William and Mary) and another genealogist has contacted me regarding their daughter Ann.

It appears that Ann was the reason for the Turnbulls came to Australia.

Ann Turnbull was bc1824 in or around Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. She was convicted in 1848 of culpable homicide and sentenced to 10 years transportation to Van Dieman’s Land (now Tasmania).

It appears that the family decided to come to Australia too, though I have no proof that

  • Oliver Hardy (yes, of Laurel & Hardy fame!)

My maternal Grandmother was a Hardy.

My parents and I loved and laughed at Laurel and Hardy all through my childhood.

I asked my mum one day – were we related to Oliver? She said, “I don’t know”.

    Now I do…

This last weekend I noticed a leading article in another blog I read about Oliver Hardy and I thought – are we related?

    Guess what?

    WE ARE!!!!

Wikipedia provided Oliver’s history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Hardy), along with the names of his mother and father. I did some searching and found that Oliver and I are 17th cousins twice removed!

I use Family Tree Maker v2012 as my primary genealogy program. Using the Relationship Chart report I find that my relationship is through my father’s ancestry – which surprised me.

So, I ran the same report against my maternal cousin Frances, and yup, there he is – Oliver is Frances’ 25th cousin, 3 times removed.

Say, what now? Why is that?

It appears that there is NO link between my Grandmother Hardy and Oliver.

We are related via completely different lines.

Mine through my father and Frances through HER father (my mother’s brother) – and thus me through, our (Frances and my) Grandfather Miller – who married my Grandmother Hardy!!!!!

  • It has been some time!

I can not believe that I have been so busy that I have forgotten to post my doings!

Let’s see, what have I been doing?

My friends have contacted me for help in researching their families:

    • Walliss (two “ses”)
    • Wilkinson (lots of John Church Wilkinsons in this bunch!!!)
    • Adendorff
    • Gay
    • Catt
    • Perry
    • Wallis (one ‘s’)
    • Rockwell

The latter family is most interesting as it has allowed me to mine the wealth of data already researched for families in the US and in New England.

    More soon!

  • My first Transcription

I’m trying my hand at my first transcription – the will of Robert Tilley d1827 in Leicestershire.

Everyone says that the handwriting is the hardest part of transcription – for me it is the lack of understanding of the legal terminology.

I wonder if there is a glossary somewhere that I can find?

  • New website found – The Extended Craxford Family Web Site

An email exchange has opened up new investigative avenues for the Tilley and associated families in Leicestershire.

The Extended Craxford Family Web Site is, of course, about the Craxford Family in Cottingham, Northamptonshire. However, a branch of the Tilley family relocated there from Thorpe Langton, Leicestershire, in the late 1700s, thus creating the link!

Alan Craxford has been most helpful in clarifying a number of questions I had, and I was most pleased when I could give a morsel back to him on a line he did not have!

If you have ANY relations in the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire areas, I would suggest you check out the site:

  • Why were the Turnbulls in Marshall Mount?

As is usual with coincidences, serendipity and flukes of nature, I posted a thread about the Turnbulls in Wollongong (William and Mary) and another genealogist has contacted me regarding their daughter Ann.

It appears that Ann was the reason the Turnbulls came to Australia.

Ann Turnbull was born circa 1824 in or around Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. She was convicted in 1848 of culpable homicide and sentenced to 10 years transportation to Van Dieman’s Land (now Tasmania).

It appears that the family decided to come to Australia too, though I have no proof that there was any communication between Ann once she arrived in Tasmania and the Turnbulls while they were still in Hawick.

Ann married another convict, William Weedon, and had 5 children, as far as I have found, and died in 1901 at the age of 78. The Weedons lived around the Westbury area, about 50kms west of Launceston.

  • Turnbulls in Wollongong area c1860s

I will be travelling to the Wollongong area shortly to investigate the areas where my Turnbulls lived after emigrating to Australia from Scotland. Sadly, I am yet to find their emigration details.

William Turnbull and his wife Mary (Wilson) Turnbull were both born c 1799, in/around Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Of course, everyone knows that the Scots continued to use the wife’s maiden name after marriage, but once arrived in Australia – Turnbulls every one!

I have found them in Australian censuses as living at Osborne’s Estate, Marshall Mount.

These days, Marshall Mount is often called/referred to as Marshall’s Mountain, though I believe that the correct usage should still be Marshall Mount. The only reference to Osborne’s Estate is the heritage listed house of the family, located on one of the main  roads in the area – Marshall Mount Road and North Marshall Mount Road.
