Ann Territt (aka Ann Terrett)

Ann Territt (aka Terrett)

She was born in or around Gloucester between 1786–1789.

She was tried before the Gloucester Easter Quarter Sessions in 1810, charged with larceny. At that time, Ann had been a servant. She received a seven year term and was kept in prison for another two years prior to her transportation. Ann was first sent to NSW in 1812 aboard ‘Emu’ with about 40 female convicts on board. The ship was hijacked by American privateers and the passengers and crew were put onto the Cape Verde Islands until they were picked up and returned to England.

Ann was re-sent to Sydney on the ‘Broxbornebury’, which left England on February 22, 1814.

She worked at the female factory in Parramatta and one year later was given leave to marry William MAKEPEACE. She was given her freedom and after William’s death, she was listed as the publican of the ‘Black Swan Hotel’ in Sydney.

Ann next married John WHEELER, a convict who had been assigned to work for Ann in 1826.

Ann’s son, Jonas Wheeler, married Rebecca Hoy, daughter of Timothy Hoy (Admiral Gambier, 1808) and Bethia Freeman (daughter of James Freeman, Alexander 1788 and Mary Edwards (Mary Ann 1791).

Hi I´m researching the Makepeaces and am interested to know if Ann Terrett married the convict William Makepeace who arrived in NSW aboard the Indian in March 1811 (he was from Worcester). I´d like to learn more about William. Did they have any children together? When did he die?
    Thanks!

I have just started to research William Makepeace who is my great great great grandfather. Ann Terrett did marry William Makepeace. We think they had a son John Makepeace. William died in 1823. He was pardoned in 1920. Please contact as there are lots of gaps in the puzzle including a question as to whether William was married to Elizabeth Cook the year before he married Ann. Elizabeth and Ann were both convicts who came to Australia on the same ship. Elizabeth and William had a daughter MaryAnn who we believe is our a great great grandmother

Hi Jane – thank you for contacting me!

NSW BDMs show V18151791 3A/1815 MAKEPEACE WILLIAM TERRITT ANN CB [CB – Church of England – Parramatta, St John’s]

So far, I have found, in the 1828 Muster, Mary MAKEPEACE, aged 13, and John MAKEPEACE, aged 10, born in the colony, Protestant, and lodging with John WHEELER, George Street Sydney (W1548). I am unaware of any other Makepeace children, though other researchers have also provided a Charlotte and a William Henry.

I believe that William died 15 Aug 1823, though I do not have any proof (I have not found any reference to a Death Certificate).

    Does this help you?
